The German Democratic Republic also adopted a distinctive war ensign and war flag. The latter was red with central horizontal black-red-gold stripes, and defaced with the state arms enclosed within a laurel wreath. The war flag was similar to the state flag, but with a laurel wreath enclosing the state arms.

According to Pedersen 1980 the war flag was adopted in 1960.

The state flag with the Arms slightly smaller, surrounding the arms a red circle with the letters "FÜR DEN SCHUTZ DER ARBEITER UND BAUERN MACHT" ["For the protection of the power of the workers and farmers"], surrounding the circle a gold wreath. The overall emblem approximately the relative size of the arms in the state flag. Surrounded by a gold fringe (except at hoist). Illustrated in Oliver 1993, p. 3 and Taschenkalender der Nationalen Volksarmee, p. 241.
